The Pineapple originated in South America between Paraguay and Brazil. During the eighteenth century Pineapples became a symbol of wealth. Only the wealthiest people could afford to build hothouses called Pineries and hire labour to grow them. They were more likely to be used as table decoration at dinner parties than eaten.
